The new variants of COVID are more contagious, and research now shows the UK variant is more deadly. Double masking can offer you increased protection.

COVID is mutating, and new variants have been discovered in the UK, South Africa, and California, among others. Researchers say that wearing a surgical mask underneath a cloth mask provides maximal protection – the surgical mask acts as a filter and the cloth adds an additional layer and helps with fit, according to commentary on mask-wearing published on Jan. 15.

Dr. Fauci stated on The TODAY Show that “If the variant that has [a] greater degree of transmissibility becomes dominant, we’re going to be faced with another challenge of a virus that has a more efficient capability of spreading.” He also indicated that wearing two masks likely offers more protection to individuals. “If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on, it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,” Fauci told TODAY.
