America has moved in to the exponential growth phase. It took us 100 days to log our first 1 million infections. It just took us 6 days to go from 10 million to 11 million. What now?
More than 3 million people in the United States have active coronavirus infections and are potentially contagious, according to a new estimate from infectious-disease experts tracking the pandemic. That number is significantly larger than the official case count, which is based solely on those who have tested positive for the virus. The number of people being hospitalized has also significantly increased, and some hospitals in Texas and North Dakota have already reached 100% capacity for the first time in modern memory.
This pandemic is following the seasonal pattern of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the worst such plague in U.S. history, in which the autumn wave was worse than the first one in the spring of that year. Even after more than 11 million confirmed infections since early in the year, more than 8 in 10 people in the United States remain susceptible to the coronavirus, experts estimate.
